Biography
Born in Amherst Nova Scotia, Feists parents divorced shortly after her birth. Singing in youth choirs, she aspired to be a writer. She sites dancing at the Calgary Winter Olympics at the age of 12 as inspiration for the video to 1234.
In 1999 Feist met Merrill Nisker who started to perform as fiery punk artist Peaches. Feist supplied guest vocalist on The Teaches of Peaches and performed on stage with her under the moniker Bitch Lap Lap. It was at this time that a long-term collaboration began with Gonzales with whom she would spend the next two years touring.
Red Demos was produced by Feist in 2001 but never released commercially. At this time Feist also joined Broken Social Scene and the band recorded their second album You Forgot It in People. It was on tour with Gonzales that new version of Red Demos was recorded featuring both original compositions and covers. The result was Let It Die her major label debut.
Moving to Europe and settling in Paris on the release of Let It Die, Feist collaborated as guest writer and singer with Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience on Riot on an Empty Street. She also worked with Jane Birkin on a song entitled The Simple Story which appeared on Janes album Rendezvous.
Feists third solo album has seen tremendous success. Critically acclaimed as well as being a commercial success the album has been short listed for the 2007 Polaris Music Prize. The album is a blend of gently playful pop and surprisingly catchy lyrics with 1234 becoming a commercial hit after being featured on an iPod advert.
Entitled The Remainder it was released in Europe on April 2003 and in May in Canada and the USA.
