The Indie Music Community

Music created out of the boundaries of commercial record labels

Independent music, more commonly known as indie music, is music created out of the boundaries of commercial record labels or companies. The aim of people who create indie music is neither the fame nor money that comes with selling their creations; rather, their primary objective is really as simple as creating music. Indie music is not a genre, although it is usually associated with Alternative Music.

The boom of Indie Music started in the 1980’s. Songs that have been produced by small label or record companies have been considered as independent. It was during this time that indie music was recognized and compiled by the United States and United Kingdom music communities. It was around this time that Indie music branched, one branch being the Alternative music that we now know. Since then, alternative music sprang and became popular.

Huge companies started promoting alternative music. However, these companies eventually dissolved the real essence of Indie music: the music itself. Record labels started promoting the artists and not the songs themselves.

So what is the difference of Indie music to mainstream? Indie music maintains the quality of the songs, without the need to popularize its creator. Those who really love music for music itself and not because of the artist understand this concept.

Nowadays, the internet is a useful medium for indie music communities. With the goal of sharing creating and sharing good music, Alterhit opens its doors to indie musicians. There is no better venue for giving people access to the music that you have created.

Although there are thousands of popular musicians, performers and singers today, many musicians still opt to be independent. The reason behind this is that there are still musicians who do not want the hassle of exploiting their songs as business ventures. They do not consider playing music or performing as a way to earn money. In essence, indie musicians are the real music lovers.

This does not mean that there is no money in indie music communities. Most independent labels offer higher percentage in royalties.  Sharing music is the best way for indie songs to be known to people or fans. Marketing as such in the mainstream is not undertaken due to high costs. Furthermore, less costs means more royalties for the artist since production costs and marketing costs are also taken into consideration.

Those aiming to express themselves and share their music should take advantage of what the web can offer. Alterhit is a good place to start if you want other people to hear and appreciate your music.
