AXL’s long-awaited ‘Chinese democracy’ took a long time, to say the least. It took almost 16 years in its completion. Most folks remarked that the album would release, perhaps, after China did become a democratic republic. Jon Bon Jovi thought the world had gone crazy, giving AXL so much importance as you could find this man on the front page of music magazines despite being stuck in the middle of nowhere, musically speaking. And yet again, much like in the early 90s, it was Guns N Roses, against the world with a new lineup, of course.

And since we’re in the New Millenium, the invasion of the internet in our lives sends a blast of opinions, facts and fictitious mumbo-jumbo with scant respect for geographical and socio-cultural boundaries. And in this case, the resentment towards AXL has been at its peak after the breakup of the original Guns.

Through all the rants, the power games, the public opinion and humiliation, it just seemed more and more obvious who owned rights to the band’s material. It doesn’t matter who should’ve or would’ve. AXL actually owns everything that the old Guns performed or released. Well, it was his baby… wasn’t it?

But it’s not the over publicized stories of bad blood between these two factions that interest me which I consider to be normal with these rockers anyways, who act like rebellious school kids which is a large part of what makes them so appealing anyways. It’s the rights to this music that AXL Rose controls with a tight fist, which is what I want to highlight. Interestingly, a young chap actually pinched digital copies of the much-awaited ‘Chinese Democracy’ from the studio that AXL was conducting the recording sessions in. Of course, the perpetrator was caught, and was convicted on charges of cyber-felony, of sorts. A heavy fine, jail-time ensued… after which I bet the young fellow learnt his lesson. The only other instance I have heard of any Guns music, is during the movie ‘The Wrestler’ where Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson does his one last hurrah, for the love of wrestling and all that jazz. Of course, Mickey Rourke thanked AXL, at the BAFTA awards, for allowing him to use the soundtrack free of cost as a part of the movie’s soundtrack. And then you begin to appreciate the power of the ‘digital age’ for it guarantees AXL’s chances of being a billionaire. Yes, everything is royalties which is of course, a huge plus due to the Copyright movement.

The ‘digital age’ has really pushed the music industry into a new direction altogether. Steve Jobs really opened the floodgates with iTunes Store that is such an innovative measure against ‘piracy’ of all media forms. You must really broke or are too miserly, if you can’t spend 99 cents for a song. And I think you should sell your computer too and get a life for all its worth.

More and more artists are moving to the online realm to sell their music in innovative ways to a much larger, untapped market than before.

Alterhit works on the same principle, in the indie music scene, with features that allow artists to post information about themselves, their gigs and all kinds of fun stuff that will help you find a larger fan base for the genre of music that you play. Alterhit also provides a feature of music downloads for artists that have put their music online as well, along with the profile information that you do find on most other sites that create a space for new bands to do their ‘thang’.

And much like how AXL protects his music (as it is connected with his making a living), Alterhit also ensures that piracy is a thing of the past, and ensures that the artist gets his due in cash and in kind for his work.
