I recently read an essay prepared by one of my students in which he wrote that while we do not fulfill our innermost desires, to do what we were meant to do with our lives, there is a constant ache that torments us from within. I refer to this as soul-ache. That inner voice that wants to show us the way to our dreams, a path that will lead us to our destiny, and help us leave self-doubt despite the looming uncertainty of it all and a tendency that requires us to play it ‘safe’. And very often, while playing it safe, we all lose out on what is most important to us, that is, following our heart.

There was always one segment in the movie, Sister Act II: Back in the Habit, that made me dweel on what I wanted to do with my life throughout these years. Whoopie Goldberg instructs her brightest student to read a little book called ‘Letters to a young poet’ by Rainer Maria Rilke, a German poet who encourages a young poet who was looking for Rainer’s guidance in justifying his talents as a poet.

Rainer tells the young poet, that if the first thing you want to do in the morning when you wake up is to write poetry, then you should seek it with all your heart. Go for it, regardless of who things what. This principle applies to all of us, as aspiring human becomings… not just human beings. In esoteric circles, this is really going after what you value most in life provided it contributes to the greater good, and this is something we’re all guilty of not doing sometimes due to self-defeating tendencies.

The movie inspired me and I began to appreciate, much like that young poet, what it is that I want to do with my life. And that little ache, slowly but surely, begins to slip away as I find myself working towards a goal with a positive outlook to life. It, indeed, breathes life into you.

I believe that it’s not how many times you fall but it’s how many times you pick yourself up. You will have to do it over and over again despite setbacks or the lack of encouragement from people around you. It’s the regular rags-to-riches story. However, it’ll be worth it all when you make it. Artists such as Bono, Sidney Poitier, George Michael, Prince and so on and so forth, have all been where you are, amongst all the has-beens and will-bes, but the difference is that they never gave up.

And this is why I really like the far-reaching technology of the internet because it greatly increases an artist’s chances of doing what they love most – create. And when you are given an opportunity to create, it humbles you… for only you know how hard that climb to success has been. And this is why I don’t consider those speeches at the Oscar or the Grammy Awards a sham at all. Those people toil for years giving their blood, sweat and tears to ‘make it happen’. They know how hard it really is, to get and stay there, too.

Interestingly, Alterhit is just one of those sites that can help you take positive steps in that direction by reaching a global audience with its platform that can take you one step closer to your dreams in using the power of the internet so that you can tell people about your band, where they play, perhaps sell digital music online by connecting to people who understand and enjoy your music. Consider this one of those ways which can really change the way your music is received, and more importantly, a defining moment in finding your identity on a path well-laid to achieving self-actualization in your life. To become, create, touch people and redefine yourself through your music. This is the true path of the artist.
